One Bible Story for a Mixed-Age Sunday School Class

For a mixed-age class, use one shared passage and different ways to respond. Tell the story together, then let children draw, retell, or write according to their reading level. You do not need to teach three unrelated lessons.

Prepare one passage and three response options

This outline is designed as a starting point for a small group around ages 5–10. Reading ability, attention, and communication preferences matter more than an age label. Allow a child to choose an easier response without presenting it as a lower level.

• Passage: Mark 2:1–12, Jesus heals a man brought by his friends.
• Materials: a Bible, paper, crayons, and pencils. Optional printed scenes should be reviewed against the passage first.
• Adult preparation: read the full passage, including Jesus' words about forgiveness and the reaction of the teachers of the law. Do not reduce the whole lesson to teamwork.

A suggested 25-minute plan

1. Welcome — 3 minutes. Ask children what they notice in a picture of the story, or introduce the people without a picture.
2. Read and retell — 7 minutes. Read selected verses and explain any unfamiliar words. Make clear which parts are direct Bible text and which are your summary.
3. Choose a response — 8 minutes. Offer the drawing, sequencing, and text options below.
4. Share — 5 minutes. Invite children to explain one thing they noticed. Passing is allowed.
5. Pray — 2 minutes. Return to what the passage shows about Jesus.

The timings are a planning example. Shorten the activity when the group needs it.

Option A: draw and tell

Invite children to draw the friends bringing the man to Jesus. Ask, “What is happening in your picture?” An adult can write down the child's words. Children who prefer not to draw can point to a picture and describe one detail.

Option B: put the events in order

Children draw or arrange three scenes: the friends bring the man, they lower him through the roof, and the man gets up after Jesus speaks to him. Read the passage together to check the order. Explain that the short sequence does not include every part of the account.

Option C: find evidence in the passage

Independent readers answer: “What did Jesus say to the man?” and “How did people respond?” Ask them to point to a verse supporting each answer. A child who finds writing difficult may answer orally.

Bring everyone back to the same discussion

Use these three discussion questions to reconnect the activities to the passage. Celebrate what each response helps the group notice. Avoid assigning older children responsibility for teaching younger children unless they want to help and an adult supervises.
